Computed Cleansing for CT Colonography Using a Three-Material Transition Model
نویسندگان
چکیده
Virtual colonoscopy is a non-invasive technique for the detection of polyps. Currently, a clean colon is required; as without cleansing the colonic wall cannot be segmented. Enhanced bowel preparation schemes opacify intraluminal remains to enable colon segmentation. Computed cleansing (as opposed to physical cleansing of the bowels) allows removal of tagged intraluminal remains. This paper describes a model that allows proper classification of transitions between three materials: gas, tissue and tagged intraluminal remains. Using a twomaterial transition model leads to polyps that may be missed if located at these junctions or artefacts that may be misjudged as polyps. The computed cleansing effectively detects and removes the remains from the data. Inspection of the 'clean' wall is possible using common surface visualization techniques.

Lesion conspicuity and efficiency of CT colonography with electronic cleansing based on a three-material transition model.
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this article is to report the effect on lesion conspicuity and the practical efficiency of electronic cleansing for CT colonography (CTC). MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients were included from the Walter Reed Army Medical Center public database. All patients had undergone extensive bowel preparation with fecal tagging. A primary 3D display method was used. For study I, th...
متن کاملA simple image processing approach for electronic cleansing in computed tomographic colonography
The prevalence of colon cancer has seen strong demand in screening for colorectal neoplasia, and this has drawn considerable attention to the technological advances in Computed Tomographic Colonography (CTC). With the assistance of an oral contrast agent, an imaging technique known as Electronic Cleansing (EC), can affect virtual cleaning of the computed tomography (CT) images, to remove fecal ...
متن کاملAdvances in CT Colonography for Colorectal Cancer Screening and Diagnosis
CT colonography (CTC) is a validated colorectal cancer test that provides an additional minimally-invasive screening option which is likely to be preferred by some patients. Important examination prerequisites include adequate colonic cleansing and distention. Tagging of residual material aids in the differentiation of true polyps from stool. Low radiation dose technique should be employed rout...
متن کاملCT Colonography (“Virtual Colonoscopy”) for Colon Cancer Screening
Background: Computed tomographic (CT) colonography, also known as "virtual colonoscopy," is an imaging technique of the colon involving helical computed tomography and computer software to generate high-resolution 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional images of the inner surface of the colon. These images are then interpreted by a radiologist to determine the presence of several types of abnormalitie...
متن کاملThin Layer Classification for Electronic Cleansing
Thin layers of tissue and residue are easily misclassified by current electronic cleansing methods for CT colonography. Thereby holes are introduced in the colon wall that hamper visualization and automated polyp detection. We present a thin layer model to detect and characterize such layers to support electronic cleansing. It is shown that the model sustains robust estimation of the location a...
